Downtown Cheney will be bustling with live music, stage performances, a beer garden at American Legion and an outdoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament during its first annual Mayfest on May 9 and 10.
"Mayfest is a revamped special event," said Paul Simmons, parks and recreation director. Formerly known as Cheneyfest, Simmons hopes that Mayfest will offer a community atmosphere and maybe even entice out-of-towners to choose Cheney as a destination spot.
Davin Perry, an EWU alumnus, is scheduled to be master of ceremonies for Mayfest. "It's going to be a great time," Perry said, adding that it will be a good spring activity and a nice break from classes.
Money raised during Mayfest will go toward a shuttle bus for both youth programs and senior citizens; money well spent according to Perry. "The shuttle will be very beneficial for the folks who otherwise would not be able to get to great recreation programs," Perry said.
Along with craft and food vendors, Mayfest will have many activities for children and a bike rodeo. Live music will be featured both nights, with a special Friday evening "Cinco De Mayo" festival.
Festivities start at 6 p.m. on Friday evening, with live music from 6 to 11 p.m. An appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog (who you may remember from elementary school) is scheduled, along with dance performances in "The Ruff Review: Canine Musical Freestyle."
To register for the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, go to cityofcheney.org, click on the Mayfest link and print out a registration form.
Registration is $80 for youth and high school students and $100 for adults. Registration was due to: Cheney Parks and Recreation, 615 4th Street, Cheney, WA 99004 by April 26. For more info on tournament regulations, call the Cheney Parks and Recreation department at (509) 498-9250.
